Venice, Italy (4 November, 2024) – A gala concert on November 16, 2024 is the first modern performance of Baroque musical works identified at Montagu Music Collection, Boughton House, UK by American soprano Liesl Odenweller.
Works by composers Hasse, Leo, Porpora and Porta, have been brought back from obscurity and will be performed by Venice Music Project at Scuola Grande dei Carmini in the Tiepolo Hall at 19:00.
Of particular interest are two sacred works (motets) by Giovanni Porta and Johann Adolf Hasse. “To the best of our knowledge, these motets are unique, found only in the Boughton House collection,” says Marica Tacconi, Ph,D., Distinguished Professor of Musicology at the Pennsylvania State University. “It’s always exciting to find new music and to bring it back to modern audiences.” Porta and Hasse were contemporaries of Antonio Vivaldi, and Porta was his colleague at La Pietà in Venice. “These motets, with their virtuosic and high-energy musical gestures, are representative of the Venetian style that attracted praise from listeners from across Europe.” Professor Tacconi will introduce the concert and provide some context surrounding the music.
“For more than a decade, the Musical Archaeologists of Venice Music Project have been identifying musical masterworks among manuscripts in archives, to restore them and share them with today’s audiences. Curators may not be aware of the unique and special nature of these works, as is the case with these treasures uncovered in the Montagu Music Collection,” explains Odenweller.
A documentary is in production about this project; recording and filming will occur. Attendees will sign a media release.
Concert tickets are limited and are €25-35; €10 for students. VIP tickets €55 will enjoy an Italian apericena following the concert.

Marica Tacconi is Distinguished Professor of Musicology and Art History atthe Pennsylvania State University. She is an expert on the music of early modern and Baroque Italy, especially Florence and Venice. A native of central Italy, she holds a B.A. in Music from Williams College and a Ph.D. in Musicology from Yale University.
