FOREIGNERS IN VENICE
Venice has always been a city open to visitors passing through and those who decide to stay. The German composer Johann Rosenmüller, who fled to Venice in 1655 after being caught up in a scandal in Leipzig, knew something about this: despite being a foreigner, he obtained a position at St Mark’s music chapel, and taught music at the Pietà, and composed in the Italian style inspired by the great Venetian masters,, gradually integrating himself into the lively musical scene of the Venetian Republic.
